Interview with Brian Chan, a street shooting lover!

You might not heard of Brian Chan before, but he is one of the ten original sponsors that made the FotoKrazy web portal a reality.  Brian currently works in Petaling Jaya as a Sales Engineer in a local company.  He also provides photography services to the public and can be reached thru email.  You can view a sampling of his photographs here.

We asked Brian a few questions about himself and his photography and this is what he had to say…

Q: Tells us more about yourself.
A: I’m a simple and ordinary person which has a passion in photography. When I was a kid, I always loved to read and was amazed by the pictures I saw being featured in the newspapers. At the time, I could not afford a camera. After SPM, I worked for my uncle and I was lucky to meet a friend of his who was involved in the photography business. He thought me the basics on photography and allowed me to use a P&S film camera. When digital cameras entered the market, I decided to purchase a digital P&S camera in 2005. It served me well. But soon I started to learn about manual exposure and got influenced by DSLRs and technical photography when I joined Lowyat.net. There I got to know Albert Yap (Maniac) and we shared a lot of experiances and techniques. This gave me the feeling of wanting to get serious in photography and I finally made up my mind to purchase a DSLR. Thus, my journey began.

Q: What is your favorite genre of photography and why?
A: My favorite genre is street photography because I like to capture something that is very common. Streets are commonplace but not many people actually put their attention on it. It is very challenging because I cannot predict the subjects and the lighting conditions of the scene. I have a group of friends who love to shoot streets and I always tag along with them to night markets and into the city proper to explore and capture.

Q: What are your sources of photography related information?
A: Mostly from the Web and online forums. Joining a photography forum is a good start because we can read and ask questions there. I am a member of a few forums such as FotoKrazy and PhotoMalaysia, mainly because they are very serious and strict on photography.

Q: What are you planning in future with regards to photography?
I want to develop my own style of photography and I hope I am able to achieve that goal. Being a photographer, we must have a unique style because there is too many genres and subjects to photograph. It is impossible to excel in everything so I will focus on developing my personal style and continue my journey.

Q: Before we end this interview, can you tells us why you chose your current equipment to expressing your art?
A: Currently I’m using a Nikon D70s DSLR. The reason I decided on this camera is because I love the color and the tone produced by the camera. I started photography about 2 years ago and I realized it is an expensive hobby and we definitely need to invest a lot of money to get good lenses. However, I believe that we have to utilize what we have and what we can afford. Currently I have 3 lenses, the Nikkor 18-70mm kit lens, the Nikkor 85mm f1.8 and the Nikkor 50mm f1.8. I use the 50mm and 85mm most of the time. Only when I need a wider angle will I switch to the the kit lens. The image quality of these prime lenses are well known and I love using them in street and portrait photography. The large aperture allows me to shoot using available light and to capture the environment and mood of the scene.
